Pathology

Small vessel vasculitis characterised by deposition of IgA in skin and kidneys

Aetiology

Commoner in young males, often preceded by URTI.is.

Signs

Purpura on legs & buttocks, arthralgia and abdominal pain. GI haemorrhage (often due to intussusception), haematuria

Symptoms

Abdominal pain, haematuria, musculoskeletal pain, rash

Investigations

Bloods: Raised IgA, ESR and CRP, FBC shows raised platelet count
Skin biopsy: IgA and C3 in blood vessel wall


Treatment

Conservative: Spontaneous recovery within 4 weeks
Medical: Analgesia for arthralgia

Prognosis

Excellent
Long-term complications are secondary to renal involvement. 
Follow-up is required for 1 year to monitor renal function and blood pressure
