Pathology

Campylobacter jejuni. 
Commonest cause of diarrhoea in UK. 
Incubation period 2-6 days.

Aetiology

Associated with birds, poultry, pets, farm animals.

Signs

Very high fever can be present.  

Symptoms

Prodrome 24-36 hours: headache, abdominal pain. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea. May mimic acute appendicitis.

Investigations

Microbiology: Stool culture.

Treatment

Conservative: Mainly supportive with oral rehydration
Medical: IV fluids and antibiotics for severe cases or immunocompromised.

Prognosis

Excellent.
Guillain-Barré syndrome, transverse myelitis, reactive arthritis.
