Pathology

Paramyxovirus 

Aetiology

Droplet transmission. Preventable by MMR vaccine (15 months).

Signs

Koplik spots: grey lesions on buccal mucosa (see figure 9.6). 
Maculopapular rash: red/brown colour, head then rest of body, starting behind the ears.

Symptoms

3Cs: cough, coryza, conjunctivitis and 3-day fever. 

Investigations

Clinical diagnosis with lab confirmation of infection

Treatment

Conservative: Supportive, analgesia. Avoid contact with pregnant or 
immunosuppressed people

Prognosis

Usually recover after approximately 10 days but can cause death.
Pneumonia, gastroenteritis, encephalitis, subacute sclerosing Panencephalitis, blindness.
