Pathology
Caused by Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), usually type 6 or 11.
Causes proliferation of epithelium resulting in warts.
Aetiology
Sexual contact, can also be transmitted perinatally.
Signs
Multiple or single lesions on genital or anal area.
Symptoms
Painless skin lesions. May cause dyspareunia, bleeding or itching.
Investigations
Clinical diagnosis..
Treatment
Medical: Podophyllotoxin, imiquimod, cryotherapy, excision. HPV vaccination protects against genital warts.
Education: Advise condom use
Follow up: Screen for co-existing STIs, contact tracing.
Prognosis
Without treatment a third regress, a third stay stable and a third increase in size.
Psychological issues, malignant change
