Pathology

Rare, benign cardiac polypoid tumour usually occurs in left atrium adjacent to atrial septum


Aetiology

F>M, familial or sporadic

Signs

‘Tumour plop’ 3rd heart sound, clubbing, loud 1st heart sound


Symptoms

Fever, dyspnoea, weight loss, arthralgia, syncope, can mimic mitral valve disease


Investigations

Bloods: FBC – anaemia or polycythaemia, raised ESR
Echo: visualises tumour


Treatment

Surgical excision

Prognosis

1-5% recurrence after surgery.
Overall prognosis after surgery is very good.
Irregular surface is associated with increased risk of emboli 
Peripheral or pulmonary emboli, arrhythmias, heart failure
