Pathology

Inflammation of small-sized venules producing characteristic ulceration of skin, eyes and mucosa

Aetiology

HLA B51, commoner in Turkish/Iranian males

Signs

Arthralgia, thrombophlebitis, epididymitis, malaise, GI ulceration

Symptoms

Oral aphthous ulcers, skin lesions (papulo-pustules), uveitis/iritis, genital ulceration, pathergy reaction (papule >2mm 48hrs after skin needle-prick)

Investigations

Bloods: Raised ESR and CRP
Microbiology: Papule swabs are sterile

Treatment

Medical: Steroids, Cyclosporin, immunosuppression

Prognosis

Poor prognosis if delayed treatment 
Optic atrophy, visual impairment
