Pathology

Lung fibrosis secondary to inflammation caused by inhaled particles

Aetiology

Coal workers pneumoconiosis: coal dust particles 
Silicosis: silica particles, found in many industries including metal mining, quarrying and ceramics manufacturing 
Asbestosis: asbestosis fibres, previously used as a common material for fireproofing and insulation.

Signs

Finger clubbing, end inspiratory crackles.

Symptoms

May be asymptomatic, progressive dyspnoea

Investigations

Spirometry: Restrictive defect. 
Chest X-Ray: Interstitial changes, pleural plaques with asbestos exposure

Treatment

Avoid causative particles, otherwise supportive treatment. 

Prognosis

Depends on degree of fibrosis 
Patients with industrial lung disease are often eligible to claim compensation through the Industrial Injuries Act
Patients exposed to asbestos are at a much greater risk of developing bronchial carcinoma and malignant mesothelioma.
Patients with silicosis are at increased risk of developing tuberculosis
