Pathology

Commonest sites are bowel and biliary systems 
Common bacteria are Staphylococcus Aureus, Streptococcus Pyogenes, Streptococcus Milleri (associated with bowel carcinoma) and Escherichia coli 

Aetiology

Usually a result of haematological spread of a bacterial infection

Signs

Right upper quadrant tenderness, hepatomegaly, jaundice, fever, signs of sepsis .

Symptoms

Fever, right upper quadrant pain, rigors, 

Investigations

Bloods: ↑WCC,↑CRP LFT: ↑ALT, ↑ALP, bilirubin can be ↑, Blood cultures
Microbiology: Aspiration of abscess 
Imaging: Ultrasound or CT Abdomen to locate underlying cause

Treatment

Medical: Antibiotics
Surgical: Drainage of abscess

Prognosis

Poor prognosis due to potential complications of liver sepsis 
Liver Sepsis, empyema, peritonitis
