Pathology
Due to Chlamydia trachomatis.
Aetiology
Sexual transmission. Congenital infection may occur.
Signs
No specific signs.
Symptoms
Women: asymptomatic or dysuria, lower abdominal pain.
Men: asymptomatic or dysuria, discharge
Investigations
MSU: Chlamydia culture and PCR.
Microbiology: High vaginal swabs in women.
Treatment
Antibiotics: Doxycycline or single dose azithromycin most common antibiotics.
Follow up: Contact tracing.
Education: Advise barrier contraceptive use.
Prognosis
Usually good if treated
Peri-hepatitis (Fitz-Hugh-Curtis syndrome)
Salpingitis and adhesions leading to infertility,
Pelvic inflammatory disease
Epididymo-orchitis,
Prostatitis
Reactive arthritis
