Pathology

Motile gram negative aerobic or facultative anaerobic rods. Acute superficial inflammation of large and small bowel. Secretory diarrhoea due to enteropathy with electrolyte and water transport defects. Incubation period usually 12-36 hours. 

Aetiology

Over 2000 species of salmonella. Associated with poultry, mammals, reptiles

Signs

Fever

Symptoms

No prodrome, 48hrs vomiting and diarrhoea, abdominal cramps occur intermittently, symptoms usually resolve after 2 weeks.

Investigations

Microbiology: Blood cultures, stool culture.

Treatment

Medical: Rehydration, antibiotics for severe or invasive disease, or in 
immunocompromised
 

Prognosis

Excellent, vascular complications carry high mortality.  
Persistent faecal carriage (~1%), bacteraemia, vascular infections, reactive arthritis.
